Soft, tender and delicate, enriched with both egg and butter, this braided beetroot bread topped with black sesame seeds is so easy and fun to make and perfect for breakfast or brunch. It's fantastic to enjoy with soup, salad, fruit spread or simple with butter.

  • 500 g Spelt bread flour
  • 220 ml Beet juice, lukewarm
  • 1 Egg, room-temperature
  • 8 g Salt
  • 15 g Fresh yeast, crumbled
  • 30 g Coconut sugar
  • 100 g Unsalted butter, room-temperature
  • 1 Small egg, beaten
  • 2 tsp Black sesame seeds for topping
  1. Place everything except the butter in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a dough hook. Stir on low speed until everything comes together. Now turn up the speed, and cut in butter and knead until you have a soft, elastic dough, about 10 minutes.
  2. Form dough into a ball and place in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a lightly oiled piece of plastic wrap, then stand in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  3. Place dough on a lightly floured work surface. Divide into 6 pieces and roll each into a strand

    , about 40cm long.
  4. Place 3 strands side-by-side on the baking sheet, with a small space between each. Form into a plait, tucking the ends under. Repeat with remaining dough. Cover again, and stand for a further 1 hour or until almost doubled.
  5. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F. Brush the loaves with egg and sprinkle with black sesame seeds. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Cool on a wire rack, then serve with butter, if desired.

I’m a huge fan of beetroot, I love them on salads, steamed and in smoothies. I’ve never had a beetroot loaf but I l love the beautiful color of it. The braiding looks perfect Angie, I’m sure mine would be a little messier.

This bread braided is so gorgeous. A local bakery does it with beet too and sumac, great combo.

Wow what a beautiful color via the beetroot though i was disappointed to see all brown on the inside when the loaf is cut open. I think some cranberries on the inside of the loaf would look nice when the loaf is cut open. Great pic!

I baked these beautiful loaves up this morning and they came out just like your photos! The dough was a dream to work with and the bread itself is incredibly soft and the flavor is fantastic. We sliced one of the loaves up as soon as it had cooled down and enjoyed it with slices of I think it's called sharp cheese. I am an American currently living in The Netherlands and we eat a lot of "oude kaas" which translates to old cheese..lol but I think back home we call that sharp. The bread can really handle the bold flavors and because of that,it will become a favorite of ours.

I noticed one or two people asked about using homemade vs store bought beet juice? I will mention that my store actually had a beet juice on sale and decided to save some kitchen clean up and purchased that. Now I have made bread with pureed beets and those of course gave it a much stronger flavor. However, the juice from the store works equally fine in my opinion and you still get the gorgeous pinkish/red color :) Thank you for a wonderful bread recipe!!

Sonya

[Reply]
Angie Schneider 8/7/17 16:45

@Sonya Yes, I love it with some well aged cheese or blue cheese too. I am glad that you have enjoyed the bread as much as I did. I am with you about the storebought juice..the flavour might be slightly different, but no different in colour. Once again, Sonya, for your feedback.
